As a senior in high school who wanted nothing more than to be a teacher, I was beyond thrilled by the opportunity to visit all the elementary schools in district and participate in all their Read Across America activities. (Here's a picture from The Record Journal)
Since dressing up as Cat in the Hat, I have found myself in a variety of costumes throughout the years that help bring books and characters to life. There's something about the amazement on the students' faces when they see their favorite character in "real life". And for my fiance, he's accepted the fact that I will never grow up and that being a kid at heart is just who I am. As for my students, I can't wait to see their faces when Cat in the Hat is their teacher on March 3rd. But until then, I tried creating an Animoto that includes images from some Dr. Seuss books that we will be reading this week (I needed way more than 30 seconds, but unfortunately I was not paying for an upgrade to include them all).
Celebrating Dr. Seuss
What's your favorite Dr. Seuss book?
Hayley - I was just loaning some Dr. Seuss books to my librarian today in preparation for Monday as well! In response to your comment, I think my favorite Dr. Seuss book is "Oh the Places You'll Go!" I actually received a copy for myself on two different occasions (my high school and college graduations!) from two different people. What I love most about his books is their messages. They usually apply to adults just as much as kids!
ReplyDeleteI love that! I have seen some parents now getting "Oh The Places You'll Go!" and having their child's teacher every year from kindergarten through 12th grade sign it and then planning to give it to them at their high school graduation. I'm pretty sure it's a pinterest inspired project, but how incredible is that? I would forever treasure that book. I know I have received numerous copies from various graduations and each one has a special message written in it.
Delete"Oh the places you'll go". Is my currant favorite. I have quote in my classroom. But my childhood favorite is Go Dog, Go. Love the dog party in the tree.
ReplyDeleteI love all the Dr. Seuss quotes! I feel like they are accessible at any age and the messages fit for a variety of life situations.
DeleteHi Hayley! I like your idea. Please tell your student I have Dr. Seuss books in Chinese. You can show the picture on amazon website.

I will read one Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish in my classroom.
Red Fish, Blue Fish is our read aloud on Monday for Math! Students are going to be creating fish bowls to show simple addition problems. I love that his work is being translated into a variety of languages!
DeleteI want to know how I can connect Dr. Seuss to Math!!! Is there any books where that is possible for the 7th grade? I need to start exploring now! I would love to incorporate literacy and math!
ReplyDeleteI'm not quite sure which books to use for that. I know that students at all grade levels enjoy Dr. Seuss (who doesn't?). Out of the 44 Dr. Seuss books he's written, I know the ones with some math concepts in them tend to be geared for elementary. I'll have to do some exploring on pinterest and other blogs to see how they are using Dr. Seuss in middle school/math. I know in Kindergarten my ways to integrate are much more numerous!
